My home culture

At the last English exam we had to write a paragraph about the British culture which reminded me about my home culture. First of all, foreigners hearing the word “Austria” are immediately creating an image in their heads of a girl in “Dirndl” and a boy in “Lederhosen” who are drinking beer and eating sausages whilst yodeling in the Alps.Sometimes this image can be true but only a minority of Austrians are like that and also only on certain occasions. Above all, there is much more to Austrian culture than this. Austrians are well-known for many things, for which we can be proud of. For example, it is true that we are famous for Mozart and Beethoven, since they were great componists of the 18th century. Personally, when I think about my home culture, the thoughts that come to mind are completely different. For instance, there are a lot of influences from other cultures, mostly from neighbouring countries. For example, one of the most famous “Austrian” dishes “goulash” is originally Hungarian. Beside this, there are several minority languages which are spoken in Austria, in particular, Hungarian, Slovenian, Croatian etc. I am also part of the Slovenian speaking minority in Carinthia, that means I grew up bilingual: Slovenian and German. Lastly, I think there are so many more examples which could be discussed relating to this topic however, in my opinion, there are some good points stated above and I hope you found out something new.

Introduction - Hey there!

Hello everybody! This is my first blog and additionally in English which is not my mother tongue. Be that as it may, I always admired people a lot who are writing every day (diaries, books, blogs) and I think the hardest thing when doing this is to catch the readers attention and make the text sound fluently and interesting while reading it. Frankly, some people have this talent ever since but I also think that it is possible to learn writing by practising a lot. Hopefully this post may help me to practise my English text writing.
My prospective posts will be about:

  • everyday life - sometimes people on the streets are behaving in a funny way or little mishaps are happening to me. More than once I already thought that these situations would be worth to be part of a movie or a book. Now I have this blog to share it with the world. Yay!
  • current issues - if I read something interesting or irritating in the newspaper or on the internet I will let you know an add my opinion on the topic
  • music - yes, I sometimes like mainstream music but it is not exactly my first choice. Furthermore I like reggae, punk, rock, soul … you will see anyway.
  • movies - I like movies like Zombieland, Guardians of the Galaxy, Intouchables, Little Miss Sunshine, etc.
  • books - the last English book I read was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Next, I am looking forward to read Gone Girl.
  • fashion - not one of the most important things for me but it makes fun and I think everybody wants to look good.
  • recipes - since I am not living with the best cook ever anymore (my mom) I have to try out some recipes.
  • handicraft work (DIY) - I like to make things on my own, and I also gave some selfmade things as presents for Christmas.
  • drawing and painting - one of my favourite hobbies.
  • sports - my intend for the New Year is to do more sport.
  • etc.

Despite the fact that I will give my best I warn you in advance that there could be some grammar mistakes in my texts. However, I hope that you find some posts in my blog which interest, inspire or simply entertain you.

Here we go!
